8th Cav

This is the Ed Griffith collection of photos and may not be reproduced for sale. Please contact webmaster if you have questions.

Ed Griffith was the Artillery FO (forward observer) for D Company 1 / 8 for most of the same time I was there. I am sure we worked together as the photo he sent me is of a lot of the same group I worked with when I was in the main CP.

This is a picture of the Radio operators before I worked my way up to it. From left is Ed,  Mike Eklund "Lefty",  "Bambi",  Don, Rico Rodriquez (Rico was from Puerto Rico),  "Beetle" Bailey and finally "Sue". I would assume the photo was taken about December 69 or January 70.

Ed's comments:

FSB Kathleen was started Christmas Day 69 and abandoned late Jan 70, it was the nicest FSB I served on! I remember well the going back to Kathleen to police up and blow the damaged ammo that was left behind. What an explosion, we should have cleared it with air traffic control.

(You can read about tearing Kathleen down in the January section of "my story".)

This was Home Sweet Home to all in D company 1st Bn 8th Cav for most of the time in country. A poncho to cover the ground and keep the army ants from eating the air mattress. Then the air mattress (most of them had some holes that were fixed by putting the tape off the bottom of smoke grenades over the holes.) and finally a poncho liner as a blanket.

I can only recognize two people in this picture. The "commanding" figure in the middle facing the camera  is none other that Captain Perkins the company commander. He is giving a briefing to a couple of new guys. The other person I recognize it SFC Mills. He has the tattoo on his arm.

This is the snake that Bill Belcher shot (see story). The guys holding the snake are Left, Rudy (he carried the big "292" antenna for the radios) and "Beetle" Bailey.
